Lil B has been putting out about one video a day for the last few weeks. "Swag on my Dick", posted above, has to be my favorite. It couldn't be lower brow, and that's where it succeeds, in my opinion.
Lil B's ability to jump between high and low-brow rap has been the topic of some interesting writing lately. In some pieces that are shockingly long for tumblr, Noz from Cocaine Blunts, and some dude who writes/tweets as Soft Money have been weighing in on Lil B's introduction and reception to new critics, specifically 2DopeBoyz and The Smoking Section. These two hip-hop
In his piece, Noz argues that Lil B is breaking down the false dichotomy between what some might call "conscious rap", and what I might call "rap that is fun to listen to". That is a compelling argument, and definitely a useful way of understanding Lil B's appeal. While it seems counterintuitive to think that Lil B can "shatter the binary", as Noz puts it, by sometimes making incredibly thoughtful, well-put-together songs, and sometimes rapping about his dick for four minutes; does this not, in some ways, reinforce the differences between the two approaches to rap? and, in a certain sense, force the listener to overcome the false dichotomy?
I suppose that is Noz' point, though, as he closes with this: "Lil B is making all of this music so we can have this conversation. Cherish that." But not all of us are intelligent freelance writers with encyclopedic knowledge of rap, like Noz. Lil B can be very confusing to the uninitiated.
This reminded me of some half-drunk thoughts I had while listening to this song on my iPod:
Lil B "Beat the Odds"
In "Beat the Odds", B raps about his actual day-to-day life, instead of the incredible fantasy world he tends to piece together on his Based freestyles. B talks about his loner lifestyle, working from home, just trying to share his thoughts with the world, and make a buck or two while doing that. He talks about his failures, his dreams of success, and perhaps a bit of guilt for doing what he does, working in the creative industry, especially when compared to how hard his mother worked to get him where he is.
Does this remind you of any stock characters from your urban 20-something existence? Perhaps a freelance writer? That's what I thought, anyway, half-drunk on Bushwick Avenue.
I could be way off here with the Lil B/Freelancer comparison, but there's no denying that it's B's artistic/writerly drive, his work ethic, and the bizarre nature of his project that have made him so popular with more - shall we say - "thoughtful" rap blogs (his combination of high- and low-brow is exactly what so many better hip-hop blogs are all about, right?), and less so with blogs like 2DopeBoyz and The Smoking Section, which tend to act as conduits for press releases and e-blasts.
I find it deeply ironic that blogs like 2DB and TSS can claim to care about rap music, and dislike Lil B for that reason, but cover losers like Drake ad nauseum, which brings me to the end of my half-drunk story.
I was waiting for the J train, when this younger neighborhood kid struck it up with me, and we got to talking about music. He was listening to Drake. I was, of course, listening to 6 Kiss. I tried to explain to him that Drake isn't actually rap; it's pop, and it's terrible. I am 24, I explained to him, and have been listening to rap since before he was born. "Have you ever heard of Lil B?" I asked him. He hadn't. All I could think of to sell him on it: "He's down with Soulja Boy".
Our conversation fizzled after that. He eventually put his earbuds back in, and we rode together towards Manhattan in silence.

UR WRITINGS ARE AMAZING AND KEEP ME GOING THIS IS LIL B
Lil B ur rappings about fucking kat stacks' face are amazing and keep me excited for world star every evening.
This is a really good post. I've mentioned this before (I can't remember if it was irl on in a blog as B is basically all I talk about anywhere) but one of the things that initially grabbed me about B is how much he reminds me of myself at that age, on the internet profusely, loving music and just acquiring as much information as possible. There's a line on "What You Doin," "back pain, long computer hours" that basically speaks to my current lifestyle more than any rap I have heard in the last decade. Is that bias? I guess so but experience always clouds opinion on some level. That's the fatal flaw of the form at least until we fully replace critics with machines (whatup pandora!?)
"But not all of us are intelligent freelance writers with encyclopedic knowledge of rap, like Noz. Lil B can be very confusing to the uninitiated."
Of course not and my post wasn't directed to everyone, but to my peers. This my more general audience read on B. Not everybody is or can get it but if you are acting as a professional or semi-professional critic then yeah it demands more thought beyond "this shit sux." That complaint obviously extends well beyond B to all of this bullshit online criticism but his case is a glaring example because his music is so explicitly idea driven. It's a problem when the artist is thinking harder than the critic.
Are Noz and Lil B one person?
I related to B because i'm on a computer all day AND i want to skull eff kat stacks
This Post is dope..great read..and i totally agree with it bein a problem for the artists to be thinkin harder than the critic in that comment.
taking a tangent from your post.
my problem with most rap blogs is that they either fall into the aggregator category(which is fine) or consist of someone's writings on "real rap" and criticisms of todays music.
where "real hip-hop" usually means someone fantasising about pretending to be in new york 15-20 years ago and ignoring anything since.
B does remind me of a younger me. Which is where his appeal to a lot of people lies.
And he comes across as really earnest and sincere which gives his music an energy that only comes on when people truly believe in what they're doing and getting it out to people.
^^^the paragraphing on that thing. eew.
U R rite about the subject matter being soo divisive from song to song. I think itll b amazing once he gets more popular and starts combing the "hoes on my dick" with the "deeper" stuff more. I think hes still trying to figure it out. Its exciting to watch tho
My constantly updated compendium of all Lil B's videoes can be found here, doodz.

I think B's art is so clearly about being expressive, creative, and yes, bizarre (as opposed to simply "getting on" in what remains of the rap industry), that those who don't have preconceived notions of what "real hip hop" or "rap" *should* sound like, cannot help but take notice of this drive/work ethic (and give it at least a degree of respect, even if they don't necessarily like what they hear).
Also, the idea of struggling creatively -- making art (or writing) out of passion and trying to make a living off of it as a secondary consideration -- certainly fits with what many "20-something" freelancers are faced with in current times. I don't know what B does to make money on a day to day basis, but I get the sense that he understands what it is to not know when your next paycheck will come, and yet still manages to forge ahead with his music. I find that to be pretty inspiring, and I'm more than a few years older than 20.
Finally, I think that there's an argument that what B is doing with his based freestyles is somewhat akin to experimental jazz music, in the sense that both B and guys like Monk, Coleman, Ra, etc. were/are pushing/obliterating boundaries and preconceived notions of what the form can be. There was also a great deal of backlash faced by bop/free jazz players for a long time before their craft was even looked at critically, much like the hostility we've seen towards the BasedGod. It's not music for everyone, granted, but it at least deserves more than homophobic slurs and outright dismissal.
I'd be curious if anyone has more thoughts on this.
Free jazz is a great analogy. Or maybe noise - a good basedfreestyle and a good noise recording both involve very little in terms of traditional technique, but a huge amount in terms of focus and concentration. I definitely think B's engaged in an extremely experimental project, and that Whartscape booking shows that other people have that understanding as well - Lil B in a lineup with Lightning Bolt and Burning Star Core?!
And there's just so much to talk about when it comes to B's music, too! Activates my media-theory-nerd side.

"Free jazz is a great analogy."
No offense, to you or B, but it's really not. Almost all the free jazz principles were technical monsters, having grown out of more traditional jazz backgrounds as a necessity. They mastered the shit and moved out. Free jazz is usually intricately composed and technique heavy even though it's different. B doesn't have those chops even though he has the sense of experimentation. But I mean a lot of this has to do with the lack of formal mentoring in the hip hop community vs. jazz.
A Pharoahe Monch Based Freestyle would be Free Jazz.
Well I think ur both wrong
I think Lil B DOES have the chops and this isnt some experiment its just his style. He reminds me alot of Supreme Clientele era Ghostface were U could clearly tell Ghost was just looking around naming random shit but it was beautiful.
Too many rappers think too hard about what there gonna say and thats what makes B super interesting 2 me.
Ppl who write anything from stories 2 stories gets flashes of ideas. B just says fuck it and throws everything together like alot of my fav rappers do
and now that im revisiting sum of my favorite Ghostface, B is just as hilariously vulgar aha "yeah bitch muthafucka... swallow it" aha
@noz Fair points...but I wasn't speaking to the technical execution of B vs. free jazz, more so to the mindset of experimentation needed to take the art form in a progressive direction.
I agree fully that a Pharaoh Monch Based freestyle would, on a technical level = free jazz (since Monch is a highly accomplished lyricist), but there still needs to be a drive towards unabashed experimentation and the questioning of what "jazz" (or "rap") music even means as a form.
What Monch lacks in outright experimentation, B lacks in technical proficiency. In that respect, my analogy does partially fail.
@noz
there are similar experimental aspects though.
Zeitoven would probably be a better candidate for the analogy though. or trax/husalah collabs.
And pharoahe monch could probably manage to ruin a based track.
"What Monch lacks in outright experimentation,"
Dude is one of the most outright experimental rappers of all time! Dont get it twisted I love B, but you have to be rapping about battling the ocean to be an experimental rapper.
*don't have to be
The chops element is why I thought noise might be a closer comparison. There's no such thing as technical skills in noise, you're only better or worse based on the final product.
I think there's some discussion needed on the subject of what it takes to be experimental in rap. Or in modern music in general, really.

"I think there's some discussion needed on the subject of what it takes to be experimental in rap."
Agree. I'm kind of lost on what we are referring to with the "experimental" descriptor at this point.
lil b is one of my favorite rappers. But right now he's like the only thing I listen to. Some raps are funny some make you think and some Is just playful. He's very versatile with his raps it's amazing. He has my highest respect. Bless

At last people that tell it like it is...I love how people take all rap serious and when you go against the grain then they try to shit all over you...I actually did a peice on Lil B about 2 3 weeks ago and people were like "fuck Lil B" and etc...but you have to take each song for what it is...and its all off the top!!! your favorite rapper cant do that...I know this because when you go to a lupe show or drake or etc...or kanye...they do it...and it sucks...this nigga lil b does that on entire songs!!!
little b is a little bitch y do u call yourself a little pretty bitch u dumb negro go sniff some more panties u gay faggot ballerina lol makin the bay look bad
as one of the few people on earth who has actually met and spent some quality time with both noz and lil b, i can say that they are not the same person, but are both pretty good dudes to pass some time away with talking about music (rap or otherwise) and other important things in life.
